U.S. House conservatives tank McCarthy bid to be speaker on multiple ballots

U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California (center) failed to get enough votes Tuesday morning in the first ballot to become House Speaker. Republicans have a narrow majority but are divided over who should be Speaker. A second ballot was expected Tuesday afternoon.
